Description
Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (sometimes called an ARB).
Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children who are at least 1 year old. Lowering blood pressure may lower your risk of a stroke or heart attack.
Valsartan is also used in adults to treat heart failure and lower your risk of needing to be hospitalized, and to lower your risk of death after a heart attack
Dosing:
The recommended starting dose of Valsartan is 80 mg once daily. The antihypertensive effect is substantially present within 2 weeks, and maximal effects are attained within 4 weeks. In some patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled, the dose can be increased to 160 mg and to a maximum of 320 mg.
Valsartan may also be administered with other antihypertensive agents
Common side effects may include:
- high potassium;
- headache, dizziness, feeling light-headed;
- flu symptoms, tiredness;
- cough;
- stomach pain, diarrhea;
- backpain, joint pain; or
- abnormal kidney test.
